When Chase and I decided to go forward with selling lamps, he asked me to make three lamps for him to market. I immediately got sketching.
I created my first cut at the structure of the lamp (without wiring it up yet) and I was pleased!
Once I wired it up though, I wasn't as sure that I liked it. I had intentionally made it kinda "squat," with the dimmer knob near the base, but it didn't look quite right to me, so I decided to add more length below the knob. I also had the wire coming out of one of the four feet, and I intended to change that, but I wasn't sure exactly how.
While I was adding in the longer pipe, I also tried raising up the middle bulb so they weren't all in a straight line. I liked it a lot better! I also replaced the bottom tee with a cross, thinking maybe the wire could come out the bottom, but since the bottom of the cross was at the same level as the bottom of the previous four feet, it wouldn't have improved the wobble.
The wire exit problem on this lamp made me consider giving drilling metal a shot, but for some reason I was resistant to buying the right drill bit for my existing drill. I ended up buying a Dremel rotary tool, though when it came, it didn't include any attachments for cutting metal. I ordered metal attachments, but it turns out rotary tools are better for cutting and sanding, not drilling, so I hardly made a dent in the metal. I tried one of my existing drill bits even though I knew they weren't design for metal, and again, barely made a scratch. I finally broke down and ordered the right drill bit. For some reason though, when it came, I was scared to give it a shot!
I ended up deciding to purchase a third type of fitting to replace the cross (which replaced the tee), what is called a "side outlet tee," which I also used in the middle of the top of the lamp. I included a hex "bushing" which reduced the side of the opening to just large enough for the wire to exit. I had also felt like the base looked too narrow considering the width of the top, so I added some width to it while I was updating the lamp to make the wire exit. That did the trick!
